Disabled and chronically ill students face many challenges in their studies.
Successful studies of persons with disabilities often require a precise study planning, which has nothing in common with the general requirements of the graduate programme. For not in every course, necessary compensations for disadvantages of the disabled are considered in study/examination rules and the respective spatial situation.
During your studies, you can make use of the expert advice of the Academic Support Group to support your equality efforts at the Advice Centre for Inclusion of the Disabled People.

The computer room at the Advice Centre (ground floor of the RUB Student House) offers accessible computers with a wide range of disability-specific equipment for free use. The equipment, in its structural and technical aspects, meets all disability-specific requirements. Students are thus given the opportunity to use computers in their daily studies directly at the university. In this way independent working is guaranteed.
The computer room consists of six stationary computers, which are also easily accessible for wheelchairs. Tables are electrically adjustable in height so that even through these measures alone, access is possible for many of the disabled students. The individual workstations are adapted to the various needs of disabled students. They are designed for the needs of visually impaired, blind and physically disabled students either with the impairment of fine motor or gross motor skills. All computers including keyboards and monitors are black coloured to prevent reflections. As a contrast, keyboards have white fonts. The monitors have black swivel arms. They are characterized by special joint mechanisms which allow the disabled students to position them with a finger. They are also equipped with the Pivot technology. Special work lamps provide optimal workplace lighting. Clipboards are fixed for template documents. Laser printers and scanners are ideally accessible for wheelchairs.
This group of people has physical disabilities, which are considered in different ways. The PC workplace is individually adapted to each particular disability. In addition, following auxiliaries can be used:
It is possible for disabled and chronically ill students to write tests under our professional supervision upon agreement with the respective examination office – for that the computer room with its technical aids is available. This must be agreed beforehand with the relevant department and the Advice Centre.
The special equipment of the computer room is a great relief for people with certain constraints - tables adjustable in height, optimal computer work lamps, dimmable light, etc. If you register in time, it is possible to reserve the computer room for the duration of the exam in order to avoid disturbances.
We can print out study materials by means of a Braille printer thus making them available even for people with impaired vision. If you contact us early enough, your documents can even be translated into Braille and printed out on special paper.
For conversion of black print into Braille, a scanner and text recognition software are available for the event that study materials are not submitted in a digital form. There is a possibility for students to edit their own working materials independently, by means of various tools, e.g. voice output software for the PC.
It is possible to rent tools from our pool of technical aids for disabled students. For example, a Braille typewriter for the blind and a notebook with magnification software „Zoomtext“ for visually impaired students.
Regular introduction events are held to give chronically ill and disabled students an understanding of technical possibilities made available in a computer room. The dates can be requested by phone or email. In addition, they will be posted at the Advice Centre for Inclusion of Disabled Students (BZI). Individual professional briefings are held upon prior time agreement with Mr. Wilhelm Vedernikov.
